CBD Oil as a Dietary Supplement for Optimal Health

CBD oil is often described as being a dietary supplement - something a person can take on a daily basis if desired for therapeutic effects on the body’s systems and a higher feeling of wellness. But what exactly is a dietary supplement, and how does CBD fit into that category?

CBD as Part of a Your Supplement Program

First of all, it is important to remember that CBD oil is not a miracle drug, where taking it will immediately solve all your health problems and there will be no need to take other vitamins or supplements ever again. All the vitamins and minerals the body needs to be healthy are unique, and CBD is certainly not a replacement for all of them.

Simply put, a dietary supplement is a non-food item that is consumed because of its health benefits, often because it contains one or more of the vitamins and minerals essential to a well-functioning body. Common supplements include daily multivitamins, Vitamin D pills, Omega 3 acids, calcium supplements, and many more.

Most supplements are taken for very specific purposes - for example, Vitamin D pills are taken when a person does not have adequate exposure to sunlight, and needs to maintain a healthy level of Vitamin D in a different way. However, since CBD has been shown to serve many different purposes, and since there are still relatively few studies done about it, the overall effectiveness of CBD as a supplement is more unclear. There are many different purposes it may serve, and therefore its effectiveness could be different for everyone.

Determining if CBD Oil is Right for You

It can be helpful to compare the effects of CBD to the effects of other popular supplements in order to see if CBD would be helpful for a certain patient. For example, CBD and Omega 3 acids see many of the same results when consumed. They both can reduce inflammation, as well as lowering the risk for many heart and brain-related diseases and aiding in cognitive health. However, it cannot be concluded that CBD is a valid replacement for Omega 3 just because they have similar effects. It is also unclear whether consuming both at once would be beneficial.

Not a Replacement, a Supplement

It is also important to remember that CBD is not a replacement for any specific vitamin or mineral that is essential for the body to function properly. For example, CBD is known to perform many of the same functions that Vitamin C can. However, that does not mean CBD could be a replacement for Vitamin C, as one is essential for human survival and the other is not. If one is to take CBD oil as a dietary supplement, it should be by adding CBD to the supplements they take, rather than using CBD to replace a specific supplement.

Taking CBD oil as a supplement will certainly have its benefits. CBD has been shown to improve the overall health of the cardiovascular and digestive systems, as well as working to regulate one’s metabolism. It aids in the functioning of the brain, reduces inflammation in the immune system caused by various neurological diseases, and even work as a pain reliever. However, CBD should not be a replacement for any other supplement or type of healthy food, but rather work as a nice addition to an already healthy diet.

As for the suggested serving size of CBD, it’s going to be different for each person. Since what works for others might not work for you, and CBD is largely unregulated by the FDA, it’s up to each person to discern what amount of CBD works best for them.

Can You Take Too Much CBD?
Can You Take Too Much CBD?

June 19, 2019

There are no clear-cut rules about CBD dosing as people choose to take CBD for different reasons. In the body, CBD acts as a sort of balancer. It stabilizes the endocannabinoid system and the extra cannabinoids just get expelled through natural bodily functions. In other words, the body uses what it needs to achieve the balance that is lacking no matter how much CBD you take.
